Vietnam Calls for Smarter, More Sustainable Tourism at APEC Tourism Ministers’ Meeting

Vietnam has highlighted the importance of digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), and sustainable development as key priorities for the future of tourism during the 13th APEC Tourism Ministers’ Meeting (TMM13) held in Macao, China.

Speaking at the ministerial meeting, Vietnam emphasized that tourism is entering a new era where technology should not only improve efficiency but also create more personalized, inclusive, and environmentally responsible travel experiences. The country called for stronger regional cooperation among APEC economies to accelerate digital innovation while ensuring tourism growth remains sustainable and resilient.

Technology Is Reshaping the Future of Travel

Vietnam believes that digital technologies and AI are becoming essential tools for both travelers and tourism businesses.

From smarter destination management and digital visitor services to data-driven marketing and personalized travel planning, technology is expected to help destinations better understand visitor needs while improving the overall travel experience.

At the same time, Vietnam stressed that innovation should always support sustainable tourism rather than simply increasing visitor numbers. Protecting cultural heritage, preserving natural resources, and creating long-term economic benefits for local communities remain central to future tourism development.

Vietnam’s Tourism Continues Strong Growth

The country’s tourism recovery continues to gain momentum.

According to official figures, Vietnam welcomed 21.2 million international visitors in 2025, an increase of 20.4% compared with the previous year. Domestic tourism also remained robust with 137 million domestic trips, generating approximately VND 1 quadrillion (around USD 39 billion) in tourism revenue.

The positive trend has continued into 2026. During the first five months of the year, Vietnam received 10.6 million international arrivals, representing nearly 15% year-on-year growth and marking one of the strongest performances in the region.

Building a Smarter Tourism Ecosystem

Vietnam has also introduced policies supporting scientific research, innovation, digital transformation, and AI applications across multiple sectors, including tourism.

The government views these initiatives as an opportunity to modernize destination management, improve visitor services, strengthen tourism businesses, and enhance competitiveness within the Asia-Pacific region.

Officials noted that closer collaboration between governments, private companies, technology providers, and local communities will be essential to creating a tourism ecosystem that is both innovative and sustainable.

Looking Ahead

As global travel continues to evolve, Vietnam aims to position itself not only as an attractive destination but also as an active contributor to shaping the future of tourism across the Asia-Pacific region.

By combining digital innovation with responsible tourism practices, the country hopes to deliver better visitor experiences while protecting the cultural and natural assets that make Vietnam unique.
